Is the role of high-tech in learning significant?
Hello! I have worked in the Education & Technology fields for about 38 years and specifically in Education Technology since 1976. After all this time I still find myself asking "is the role of high-technology in learning significant". Your thoughts?

Re: "Is the role of high-tech in learning significant?" I need to understand what is high-tech, pak..." An enquiry from our Facebook group" - (A quick personal note) As technology is continually changing it is probably best if we look at technology from the perspective of what is appropriate technology.
Phillip Rekdale;
Appropriate Technology is the most learning effective, cost effective technology "available" for illustrating and communicating, while stimulating curiosity, enthusiasm, creativity, innovation, and active student participation in the learning process. (My personal perspective)
When I was working as an education technologist overseas at a university during the day, I taught electronics to people working in the electronics industry in the evening. The learning technologies that I chose were based upon the learners past academic history (not grades) and their entry level understanding of the basic principles of electronics.
For instance, I found that using simple technologies for instance bottles with holes and water was the best technology for conveying understanding and clarifying issues like Voltage, Current and Resistance. Even though I had access to a wide range of higher technologies I found that basic technogies (which raise the learners curiosity and participation) where they learn through "discovery principles" were most effective in achieving true understanding.
When I was teaching mathematics (in electronics we use a lot of maths) I always came back to the whiteboard as the most effective technology for "developing understanding", because all students could participate easily and contribute to the development on the whiteboard without the need for specific skills in using the technology.
Often the students had not used maths for several years and the more complex formulas sometimes posed difficulties so I would break them down into steps using basic maths processes, during which the students could contribute and thus re-inforce their confidence until they felt confident enough to utilize more complex formulas effectively. Again participation in the process I believe is critical (even for large groups of learners).
I could have used higher technologies but I believe that the whiteboard is one of the most effective tools because of its simplicity and the fact that it is always ready when we need it. The white/black board is still the most used learning medium globally (and it's always ON :-).
When I teach now, I still rely upon simple technologies, even though I have 8 computers now (3 laptops and 5 desktops) because of the issues of student activity raised above, but also because I can conduct the lesson effectively anywhere without cocerns for power failures and technical problems, and I still believe that they are the most effective for creating an active-learning environment (even though in my technology profession I use all the latest technologies) .
Our brain (and imagination) is still the best technology for generating learner interest and stimulating the learning process.

Teknologi Pendidikan;
educational technology domain but not all, of them is how to make appropriate technology such as you. Like how to create conditions of learning in accordance with the environment
Phillip Rekdale;
Yes I agree, there are so many things that we need to address and change. I'm only trying to stimulate thinking about the many "realistic" and achievable things we can do to begin addressing the myriad of inequities and issues in our scools.
I am sure you have looked at http://MBEProject.Net and http://InovasiPendidikan.Net where very significant changes have already been achieved and are continuing to make real inroads in many schools. We need a genuine national effort.
What really concerns me is that many new graduate teahers still don't seem to be applying these very basic EdTech principles in the schools - why?
This may sound strange if you have never taught English in a modern school, but we can actually learn so much about modern and effective teaching strategies that can be applied in all fields and subject areas from ELT theory.
The ELT profession is always at the forefront of teaching methodology and has been through every phase of new teacing theories for generations including the application of technology. Do you remeber Computer Aided Language Learning (CALL), where is it now?
When I taught English again in Australia about 3 years ago I was surprised to see that all the teachers were busy every morning cutting up bits of paper creating learning materials, however they were all busy creating ELT software back 1997, where has the technology gone? I don't know, I couldn't find it :-)
We are currently training about 35 public school English teachers in Jakarta at the moment and it is exciting watching them learn so many new things about teaching using basic contextual learning practices and appropriate technology.
One serious obstacle that we are also trying to address is the limitations placed on creativity by the culture in their schools. We are now trying some new strategies to assist them in achieving some freedom in their classrooms.
The culture in our schools greatly opposes any attempts by teachers who want to be creative.
Other Issues: "Creating A New Generation Of Teachers From Within An Old Paradigm" (Can We Possibly Succeed?)
Maybe I will have to write a book :-)
Naaaa...., I am hoping we can find some dedicated professionals here who understand and really want to become agents of change - we desperately need them, and it would be ideal if they could come from within the State Universities (Universitas Negeri).
